TEXAS ROAD TRIP

Best Places I Ate in the RGV

Rio Grande Valley, Texas

I’m on my way back to Wyoming. Sad, I know, especially since I hear it just started to snow up there. But since I’m on the road I thought I’d share a short post about all the great places we ate at in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). I’m a huge foodie. Give me a new place to travel to and a new restaurant or coffee shop to try, and I’m a happy camper. So here is my list of my favorite spots in the RGV.

Coming in at number 5 is El Sancho’s Food Truck and Jitter’s Coffee which is located in Mission, Texas. I had an iced coffee, chilaquiles, and a breakfast sandwich. It’s super trendy for a millennial like me, but so delicious!

Number 4 is Nana’s Taqueria in Llano Grande, Texas. I had the birria tacos. They were pretty delicious, but my sister made some for my birthday and hers were absolutely superior. 🙂

Next up at number 3 is Don Pepe’s in McAllen, Texas. I had the Filete de Pescado al Chipotle which was just a fish dish with veggies and a delicious sauce. What was really special about this place was that we got to dine with our Texas cousins. They are a fun group!

Number two which was super close, and my cousin Guylah’s favorite, was “El Güero’s” Chicharrones in Palmview, Texas. I’ve never really had authentic chicharrones before except when a family member prepares a pig for a big event, but these were on a different level! They were sooooooo good! Oh and if you don’t know what a chicharrone is, it’s deep fried pig skin. We ate them with corn tortillas, beans, guacamole, cilantro, tomato, and onion. If you are ever in the area GO THERE!!

And coming in at Number One is Joe’s Oyster Bar in Port Isabel, Texas. Technically it’s not in the RGV, but honestly Padre Island was my favorite part of the trip, so I had to include it. I had the Nathan’s Special which included shrimp, crab cakes, and fried fish. The crab cakes were amazing! Everyone on staff was so friendly and helpful. They even have a specific guy who cleans the fresh shrimp that the locals say if he takes a day off you can taste it. Crazy right?!? The food was delicious!

I do have to include an honorable mention. Jr’s Super Market is super close to my cousin’s house, and we went there often. There was a boy there selling fresh Rivas Nieves Mexicanas which is like a fruit snow cone. Oh. My. Goodness. I loved these!!! I had to get one every time. My favorite was the mango. These were so good!

And there you have it! My top places to eat in the RGV! I hope if you’re ever in the area you get to try them. God Bless!!
